About the Location: Nestled an hour’s drive north of Bhavnagar, this picturesque 34-square-kilometer park is a stunning expanse of pale, custard-colored grassland nestled between two seasonal rivers. It is renowned for its blackbucks—graceful and swift antelopes adorned with elegant, spiral horns that can reach up to 65 centimeters in length in mature males. The park is home to approximately 1,800 blackbucks, as well as blue bulls, India’s largest antelope, and a vibrant array of bird species. Among these are the harriers from Siberia, with around 2,000 visiting during the winter season. In total, the park hosts over 120 bird species. With a bit of luck, visitors might even catch a glimpse of wolves in their natural habitat. The best time to visit is early in the morning, as wolves are more active then. During the day, blackbucks are easily spotted, while the elusive wolves retreat into the shadows. The grassland, with its golden hues, is often punctuated by clusters of blackbucks. These majestic creatures typically move in gendered groups, with males and females keeping to their own. Hiring a guide is mandatory, ensuring visitors not only navigate the park safely but also enjoy fascinating stories about the local wildlife and village life.
Brief History: Established in July 1976, the sanctuary initially covered 18 square kilometers. In 1980, an additional 16 square kilometers were added, bringing the total area to 34 square kilometers. Despite being one of the country’s smaller national parks, it boasts a remarkable diversity of wildlife, making it a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts.
